Fysical experiences

To spin

When children spin, different parts of the brain are stimulated at the same time. This develops and creates new neural pathways in the brain - pathways that improve learning ability, spatial awareness, rhythm, etc. Spinning games develop motor skills and balance, while building muscle strength.

Choose different equipment that gives the children the opportunity to sit and spin, stand and spin and lie down and spin. It can either be three products or the same product, such as SpinR², which allows children to sit, stand, lie and spin

Slides

When children slide, they experience height, movement and the thrill of speed and risk. Slides stimulate children's vestibular system and sense of balance.

Have slides at different heights if possible, a wide slide is good for being able to ride along and support children with disabilities. You can also choose different types of slides, e.g. tube slide, curved, straight, spiral. to provide different experiences. Consider using non-static slides for people with a cochlear implant. A place to sit is needed while the wheelchair is collected from the chute. Try to get the highest slide that is the most exciting available, then it will become a meeting place for the children.

Seesaws

Seesaws stimulate and develop the balance system (vestibular system).
Try to choose products that provide movement both back and forth and to the side. A tip is to choose several products that inspire you to swing sitting, standing and lying down, some rocking swings provide the opportunity for all variations.
Consider choosing swing equipment both for individual play and for several children. Larger size swings are good to bring because older children or adults can use them together with the child

Swings

Swinging challenges, stimulates and develops children's vestibular system. Swings are available in many different models, a varied selection on the playground can give children of different ages and regardless of ability the opportunity to swing.

Climbing and crawling

Climbing and crawling challenge and stimulate body awareness. We have divided climbing and crawling into three levels of difficulty to make it easier to choose a variety of experiences. Climbing activities must have at least two levels of challenge. Remember to always include level 1 as an option. This type of equipment is normally used by the older children. For example, a large stone with little support, a climbing net, vertical stone wall, etc.

Balance

An accessible playground should offer a wide range of activities that stimulate children's need for challenge, while improving their balance and building body strength.

Choose balance activities with different degrees of difficulty. It can be both static and moving balance activities. Preferably also a balance device where the child can sit and stand.

Trampolines

Jumping and bouncing play is good for challenging, stimulating and developing balance and body awareness, while giving children a fun activity that gives them the feeling of flying.

Walking, running and rolling

Create opportunities for children to play together while increasing their endurance, muscle building and strengthening balance. Leave space between the products where the children can play games or follow tracks in the pavement on the ground. Use obstacle courses or mazes that are wide enough so that someone in a wheelchair can easily get through. Tracks that have ups and downs are fun and good exercise.

Experiences from a wheelchair or other aid
Enables children who use wheelchairs to play with friends and experience movements that stimulate balance without leaving the chair. Choose equipment where the child can remain in the wheelchair and play with other children, e.g. the carousel.

Sensory experiences

Tactile

Stimulate the children through experiences where they exercise and develop their senses. Tips on different structures:

Smooth - the material that is free from unevenness. This can be metal bars, metal slides, mirrors, etc.
Soft - eg grass, rubber and fabric.
Hard - a solid and solid material to touch, eg, stones and metal.
Rough - material with bulges, irregularities or breaks, eg stones, boulders and ropes.
Grainy - the material has a gritty texture. For example, sand, gravel, boulders or stones.
Uneven - bumpy, not smooth or flat. For example, a trough with built-in indentations or lumpy ground..

Give the children the opportunity to use their whole body in the tactile experiences, for example by rolling down a hill, pouring sand or water over themselves. Riding on tracks with an angle and/or texture is a fun play experience.

Hearing

Stimulate hearing by adding play features related to hearing. Speakerphone is a fun product where you can practice where you can practice speaking to and listening to each other. Other ways to develop hearing are with outdoor musical instruments, creating sounds by pressing a button, entering a special area or walking over a piece of play equipment.

Visual

There should be features and equipment in the playground that are eye-catching, surprising and stimulating to look at. They help develop vision and the visual sensory experience. Play panels stimulate children to follow, find and match, which also helps develop the visual system. Plan with color and pattern. Contrasts, sculptures, flags and paving enhance the experience.

Cozy places

Plan places within the play area where the child can go to be by themselves, relax and unwind. The place should feel protected, but still allow the parent or guardian to see the child, for example a place under a play stand, a playhouse, or a tunnel with a window.

Nature

It is important to let children interact with nature to stimulate many different types of creativity, imagination and social action. It also provides increased health and well-being.

Playgrounds are not only about playground equipment, but also about including natural features such as trees, bushes, grass, bark, soil, sand, water and stones. Planting objects that encourage birds, small mammals and insects is also good for getting children involved with nature. Natural features on the playground increase sensory impressions and experience.

Social experiences

Play together

Give the children the opportunity to play with each other by choosing equipment that requires two or more people to be involved, e.g. swings or other play equipment intended for more than one person.

The social side of the game - playing with others and making new friends, is encouraged by choosing features that are designed to be used by several e.g. seesaws.

Other tools for social interaction are sand, water and nature play as well as group seating where several people can sit together. Make places where children can watch and imitate each other. Then they learn from each other and enjoy each other's company.

Dramatic and imaginative play

Dramatic play gives children the opportunity to use their language, cognitive and social skills. It is good if playgrounds give children the chance to create play "themes" and act by participating in different roles that are spontaneous, child-initiated and open. Feel free to use a mix of abstract and realistic play equipment and features, for example a themed play stand, a shop, a bridge, a train, a boat or a play house.

If possible, it is good to have loose objects and props that can be used in a creative and flexible way without requiring great physical ability or motor skills. Loose objects such as buckets, blocks or sticks can be moved and carried around, combined in different ways, taken apart and put back together again. It can be equipment for sand, soil and water, mobile games or sporting goods. This type of material can be used by children as they wish to change the environment and increase opportunities for social, creative and imaginative play.
